COVID-19 VIRUS TERMINOLOGY
The purpose of this web page is to present definitions and explanations of medical and scientific terms associated with viruses, bacteria and other pathogens in layman's terms. More terms will be added as time permits. This page is initially designed as a quick reference for readers of the COVID Cover-Up Series of newsletters here.
-cyte (as a suffix) Cell. Example: An erythrocyte is a red blood cell. erythro (red); cyte (cell)
cyto- (as a prefix) Cell. Example: A cytokine is a protein. cyto (cell); kine (movement; origin, Greek "kinesis" which is "movement or activity of an organism in response to a stimulus".
Cytokine: Cyto + kine = cell movement. A cytokine is an immune system protein released by cells that specifically effects the interactions between cells, communications between cells or the behavior of cells. Examples of cytokines are interferons, interleukins, lymphokines, cell signal molecules, such as tumor necrosis factor, that trigger inflammation and respond to infections.
Cytokine Storm: A severe immune reaction in which the body releases too many cytokines into the blood too quickly. Cytokines play an important role in normal immune responses, but having a large amount of them released in the body all at once can be harmful. A cytokine storm can occur as a result of an infection, autoimmune condition, or other disease and it may also occur after treatment with some types of immunotherapy. Cytokine storm signs and symptoms are high fever, inflammation (redness and swelling), fatigue and nausea. Sometimes, a cytokine storm may be severe or life threatening and lead to multiple organ failure. Medically speaking, a cytokine storm is called hypercytokinemia. It is sometimes referred to as an "inflammation storm".
Hypercapnia: Also known as hypercarbia and CO2 retention. It is a condition of abnormally elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the blood. [More info]
Hypoxia: Deficiency of the amount of oxygen reaching body tissues. [More info]
Interferons: Immune system proteins that were so named because they "interfere" with viruses and cancer cells and keep them from multiplying." Interferons are found in nearly every cell of the body and are a natural component of our immune system. There are three main types: Interferon-alpha, Interferon-beta, Interferon-gamma. Interferons recognize, alert, attack and stop viruses and cancer cells from growing and dividing.
Virus:
A virus is a microscopic organism that invades living cells in order to reproduce. Many, like influenza, cause illness. Antibiotics don't affect a virus.
When infected, a host cell is forced to rapidly produce thousands of identical copies of the original virus. When not inside an infected cell or in the process of infecting a cell, viruses exist in the form of independent particles, or virions, consisting of: (i) the genetic material, i.e. long molecules of DNA or RNA that encode the structure of the proteins by which the virus acts; (ii) a protein coat, the capsid, which surrounds and protects the genetic material; and in some cases (iii) an outside envelope of lipids. The shapes of these virus particles range from simple to more complex structures. Most virus species have virions too small to be seen with an optical microscope.
Viruses are the smallest of all the microbes. They are so small that 500 million rhinoviruses (which cause the common cold) could fit on to the head of a pin. They are so tiny they can easily pass through the fibers of a face mask. They are unique because they are only able to multiply inside the cells of other living things. The cell they multiply in is called the host cell.
A virus is made up of a core of genetic material, either DNA or RNA, surrounded by a protective coat called a capsid which is made up of protein. Sometimes the capsid is surrounded by an additional spikey coat called the envelope. Viruses are capable of latching onto host cells and getting inside them.
