It is not a secret that unhealthy dietary choices can cause cancer, cardiovascular problems, diabetes, obesity and many other ailments. It is also not a secret that healthy dietary choices can give your body what it needs to heal itself of those very same "diseases". Unfortunately, the government-controlled educational system does not teach us simple things like HOW TO EAT FOR OPTIMUM HEALTH AND LONGEVITY. So what does it mean to eat "healthy"?
That is the question that will be addressed in this series of newsletters in order to help sort fact from fiction. Fortunately, scientific, evidence-based research in diet and nutrition has flourished in the past two decades and especially in the last five years.
Much of that information is not biased and not influenced by vested corporate interests. Diligent researchers have discovered the importance of weeding out any bias on the part of the researchers in each study or who is funding a research project, for example. In this way the results of biased, flawed or corrupted research can be given its due consideration.
THE DIET-OVER-DRUGS REVOLUTION
It is no secret that most medical schools are funded in part by pharmaceutical corporations and they offer very few classes in nutrition, if any. Also, doctors are pressured to conform by government agencies, insurance companies and the American Medical Association (AMA). Perhaps the biggest threat that keeps doctors in line comes from potential lawsuits for not following current "standards of care". Consequently, the result has been that most doctors prescribe drugs over diet.
However, many medical doctors have taken personal responsibility to learn the importance of diet for optimum health. And now with the help of the internet and online videos, a revolution is occurring that is literally changing the face of the "health" industry. In this newsletter series we will cover the leaders in the "diet over drugs" revolution and what they have discovered.
Perhaps these positive changes would be better termed a renaissance rather than a revolution since it is essentially a rebirth or revival of the natural eating habits of our ancestors as hunter-gatherers and as organic farmers (before the word "organic" was coined). More people are now returning to "paleo" and "keto" diets and various methods of fasting that mimic the feast-or-fast lifestyles of our genetic forebears. These diets will be covered in detail in upcoming newsletters.
Evidence-based science now confirms that such dietary changes can help prevent chronic "diseases" caused by unnatural food processing, food additives and chemical-based farming. Organically farmed food has gone mainstream with supermarkets creating large organic/natural food sections as a healthy alternative to modern (over)processed foods.
As individuals, we each have a different genetic make up so ideal diets will vary from person to person. Consequently, there is no "one size fits all" diet in spite of what some doctors and nutritionists would have you believe.
However, the more recent evidence-based dietary principles have been shown to prevent and often cure these common "diseases" for many people. Longevity scientists like Valter Longo have combined years of laboratory studies with epidemiological research of cultures and individuals that live long healthy lives. Ironically, modern science is now reaffirming the health benefits of eating and fasting like our ancestors did to avoid modern dietary diseases.
Of course, even positive changes can incite rather aggressive resistance to those changes. After all, there is a tremendous amount of money, corporate interests and personal careers dependent upon the current medical model that mostly treats symptoms with drugs instead of addressing the source of health problems.
Medical doctors themselves must overcome the intense programming they received in years of very expensive "education" that is marred by junk science due to corporate influence. The resistance to change in the medical establishment is also compounded by "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" peer pressure. This groupthink control can be summed up by a quote often attributed to Mahatma Ghandi:
"First they ignore you,
Then they laugh at you,
Then they fight you,
Then you win."
Dietary Propaganda & Fraud
In addition to the resistance from the medical establishment society is adversely influenced by the propaganda, lobbying and outright fraud perpetrated by food corporations, Big Pharma and Big Ag "associations". Unfortunately, these corporate manipulations are intentionally designed to mislead people to believe unnatural foods, toxic medicines and sugary soft drinks are beneficial for our health.
In 2016 the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) surprisingly revealed a major fraud perpetrated in the 1960s to distract people from the harmful effects of sugar and vilify fat and cholesterol as the cause of coronary heart disease. The fraud was perpetrated by the Sugar Research Foundation which is also known as the Sugar Association, the trade association for the sugar industry.
"Early warning signals of the coronary heart disease (CHD) risk of sugar (sucrose) emerged in the 1950s. We examined Sugar Research Foundation (SRF) internal documents, historical reports, and statements relevant to early debates about the dietary causes of CHD and assembled findings chronologically into a narrative case study. The SRF sponsored its first CHD research project in 1965, a literature review published in the New England Journal of Medicine, which singled out fat and cholesterol as the dietary causes of CHD and downplayed evidence that sucrose consumption was also a risk factor." This fraud was also exposed by the New York Times in their 2016 article "How the Sugar Industry Shifted Blame to Fat". The Times also exposed sugar and beverages corporations in their 2015 article "Coca-Cola Funds Scientists Who Shift Blame for Obesity Away From Bad Diets". Sadly, doctors and society at large have still not deprogrammed themselves from this kind of intentional disinformation about diet from so-called "scientists" who slant and falsify research in favor of corporate interests.
Consequently, we have been programmed to believe in myths like sugar is good for us, that fat makes us fat and that cholesterol causes heart disease. We now know that the opposite it true.
It is excess sugar in grocery store foods and excess grain carbohydrates that make many people obese and is literally crippling populations. Certainly, unnatural trans fats have played a major role in cardiovascular disease and they are especially harmful in conjunction with sugar in donuts, pastries, pies and deep fried fast foods.
One of the Harvard "scientists", D. Mark Hegsted, who was involved in the 60s sugar fraud became the head of nutrition at the US Dept of Agriculture in 1977 where he helped draft the forerunner to the federal government's dietary guidelines. This is only one of too many examples of how junk scientists infiltrate high-level government positions and program populations with corporate-sponsored lies.
The FDA is the worst example of this kind of fraud because it has the power to destroy peoples' lives, businesses and careers as well as vilify nature's healing herbs such as CBD oil from the cannabis plant based on no credible evidence whatsoever. That is why it is so important to carefully scrutinize and question research studies masquerading as "science".
Good fats--when eaten with very low (or zero) carbs--actually burn body fat. For example, overweight people on ketogenic diets report the pounds and visceral (belly) fat rapidly melting off even though most keto diets recommend 70% to 80% fat intake, moderate protein and very low grain carbs and no sugar. Fat also helps to curb hunger so it makes weight loss dieting much easier due to not being hungry between meals.
"Atherosclerotic Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) is reponsible for one in every six deaths in the United States as well as being the leading cause of death throughout the developed world. Consuming a diet high in sugar for just a few weeks has been shown to cause numerous abnormalities found in patients with CHD, such as high total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, oxidized LDL, uric acid, insulin resistance and abnormal glucose tolerance, low HDL, and altered platelet function." Cholesterol is not the cause, but merely a symptom of "heart disease". Cholesterol is the body's mechanism to act as a "bandaid" to remedy heart and blood vessel damage caused by eating unnaturally.
High Cost of Poor Dietary Choices
A recent study revealed that most bankruptcies in the US were due to medical expenses. However, we now know that the medical expenses associated with cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia--as well as the pain and suffering--can be prevented simply by changing our diets and lifestyles. We now understand this due to the more recent evidence-based science that refutes the corporate medical model.
For example, the epidemic of obesity and Type 2 diabetes caused by poor dietary choices is overburdening government health programs which translates to a financial burden for all citizens.
"The estimated total economic cost of diagnosed diabetes in 2017 is $327 billion, a 26% increase from our previous estimate of $245 billion (in 2012 dollars). This estimate highlights the substantial burden that diabetes imposes on society." [Source]
WHY IS EATING ORGANIC FOOD SO IMPORTANT?
First, the Bad News:
Unfortunately, most grocery store shelves are stocked with foods that contain synthetic ingredients like flavor enhancers, pesticides, herbicides, artificial flavors, artificial colors, refined sugars, high fructose corn syrup, trans fats, etc. While these unnatural foods may taste good, we are not warned about their potentially devastating effects on our health over time.
It is no secret that many pesticides and herbicides can cause cancer as well as many other health problems. According to the US government's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):
"Different pesticides affect human health in different ways. A wide range of health effects, acute and chronic, are associated with exposures to some pesticides. For example, some pesticides may affect the nervous system, while others may irritate the skin or eyes. Some pesticides may cause cancer and others may affect the endocrine system. The health risks from pesticide exposure depend on the toxicity of the pesticides, the amount a person is exposed to, and the duration and the route of exposure. Evidence suggests that children are at greater risk of illness or injury from exposure to pesticides in general, including effects on brain development."
According to the Environmental Working Group's (EWG) 2019 analysis of US Department of Agriculture data:
1) Nearly 70 percent of the produce sold in the U.S. comes with pesticide residues.
2) 92% of kale samples contained up to 18 different pesticides.
3) One of the most frequent pesticides found in kale was Dacthal (DCPA) which has been classified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a possible human carcinogen. Dacthal has been prohibited for use in Europe since 2009.
4) The USDA found 225 different pesticides and pesticide breakdown products on fruits and vegetables even after they were washed and peeled!
5) The USDA data reveals the worst pesticide-laden foods to buy: Strawberries -- Spinach -- Kale -- Nectarines -- Apples -- Grapes -- Peaches -- Cherries -- Pears -- Tomatoes -- Celery -- Potatoes
A Harvard study found that for women were less likely to have a live birth if they ate more high-pesticide fruits and vegetables.
According to the CDC's Third National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals, 90% of Americans that were tested had five to sixteen pesticides in their blood and urine. However, the CDC only tested a fraction of the pesticides used at the time of that study.
There are currently over 13,000 lawsuits against Monsanto/Bayer for causing numerous types of cancers with these herbicides. We are all exposed because Monsanto's glyphosate-based herbicides are the world's most heavily-used herbicides for more than 100 food crops, including wheat, corn and soy, as well as residential lawns, golf courses and school yards.
Monsanto/Bayer's glyphosate-based herbicides increase the risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma by 41%! In fact, Monsanto/Bayer recently lost another case by a California man who had developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma after using Roundup for 26 years. Monsanto has been engaged in a decades long cover-up and denials of glyphosate toxicity.
The World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) declared glyphosate a probable human carcinogen in 2015 based on a review of scientific literature.
A two-year Caen University study of the effects of Monsanto's "Roundup Ready" genetically-modified (Gm) corn revealed the carcinogenic properties shown in the pictures on the right. This thorough research revealed that 50 to 80 percent of female laboratory rats developed tumors at the start of the 24th month. About 70% died, in comparison to 20% in the control group. This 2012 study also showed that Roundup caused breast cancer as well as severe liver and kidney damage at very low levels that are permitted in drinking water. Insect populations are declining around the world. Herbicides and insecticides certainly play a major role in that reduction. Bee populations are threatened by use of insecticides such as neonicotinoids. According to the US Dept. of Agriculture about 1/3 of the human diet depends upon insect-pollinated plants and honeybees are responsible for 80% of that pollination.
Now the Good News:
According to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), a study of 68,946 French adults found that THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN THE RISK OF CANCER AMONG HIGH CONSUMERS OF ORGANIC FOOD!
According to the USDA's data some of the foods that contain the least amount of pesticides and herbicides are: Avocado -- Pineapple -- Frozen Sweet Peas -- Onions -- Eggplant -- Asparagus -- Kiwis --Cabbage -- Cauliflower -- Cantaloupe -- Broccoli -- Mushrooms -- Honeydew Melon
However, the best way to steer clear of unnatural chemicals is to shop organic. Many people shy away from the organic sections in grocery stores due to the higher prices. However, is paying a few cents more for a carrot or celery stalk really that significant when medical costs are extraordinarily high?
How does the higher cost of organic foods stack up against the cost of chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, heart bypass surgery, health insurance and high-priced pharmaceuticals?
And is the pain and suffering caused by poisonous farm chemicals really worth saving a few dollars on non-organic food?
How do the numbers stack up against the loss of income from being too sick to hold down a job or maintain a business?
