WHO IS WIM HOF?

If you have never heard of Wim Hof then this newsletter may be life changing for you! 

Wim Hof is a man from Amsterdam, Holland who is often referred to as "The Ice Man".  He discovered a very simple way to breathe in conjunction with cold therapy that can enhance health and well-being in ways you cannot imagine until you try it.

Wim Hof set 26 Guinness World Book of Records for withstanding very cold conditions.  For example, he swam with seals and ice in the Arctic Circle and swam 100 meters under ice with just one breath.  However, one does not have to endure these extremes to gain the benefits from cold therapy.  Just a simple cold shower after a hot shower can greatly beef up our immune systems, overall health and well-being.  As Wim Hof states:  "A cold shower a day keeps the doctor away."

Wim Hof allowed researchers at the Saint Radboud University Medical Center to inject him with an E.coli endotoxin which always gives people flu-like symptoms.  An endotoxin is a toxin that is produced by certain bacteria and released upon destruction of the bacterial cell. 

However, Wim Hof successfully used his breathing technique to fight off this attack on his immune system.  No one else had ever done this before so the researchers' first thought that he had unique genetics.  However, Wim Hof trained others in just four days to fight off the endotoxin attack on their immune systems just using Wim's breathing technique and cold therapy.  It is Wim Hof's mission to show that anyone can do this as revealed by this short video:

It is very important to closely follow Wim Hof's breathing instructions.  After watching the video above you can use the "breathing bubble" video below as a guide to try out the breathing.  It is important not to push yourself too hard in the beginning.  Do not overdo it.  Listen to your body and stop if you need to.  As Wim says:  "Do not force it."

THE WIM HOF METHOD -- COLD THERAPY

WIM HOF COLD SHOWER -- What Precautions Should You Take When Taking Cold Showers?

Wim advises people not to over do it and not to shock the body--"Do not force it".  Do it gradually and on your own level and in consideration of your personal health and well-being.

 

1. Understand Your Body:  Cold showers take a toll on the body and overdoing it may not be what's best for you, so it's key do what's best for you as an individual.

2. Adjust How Long You Spend:  You want to understand your body's natural responses to how long you should spend in the shower.  Despite the many benefits of taking a cold shower, spending too long in one can work against you as it takes a lot of energy to have a cold shower.

3. Reduce Intensity with Age or Illness:  If you are unwell or are a little older, try to reduce the intensity of cold showers, meaning easing yourself into it and maybe not going really cold.  This is because you need to care for your health and wellbeing first and foremost, where you don't want to exacerbate potential problems.

4. Don't Start With Ice Cold Water:  You shouldn't make your cold shower too intense until you develop your coping mechanisms and adjust to it.  Try instead to adapt progressively, even starting out with relatively warm water and gradually reducing it to be cooler with time.

5. Avoid Heavy Meals Beforehand:  When you eat a heavy meal the body needs to use blood to help in the digestion process, meaning it uses a lot of energy for this.  Therefore, this causes a problem if you have a heavy meal before a cold shower, as due to the need of blood for the digestive system, it can take away from blood flow from other parts of the body.  [Source]
